"There's definitely a level of pressure because of it, but it's the name I was born with so I figured I may as well stick with it," he shrugs. However, McQueen discovered that his family name was both a boon and a bane: it secured him parts in CSI: Miami, a recurring role as Kyle Hunter in Everwood and a lead in the Disney movie Minutemen, but it also came with a weight of expectations. ![]() I went to a couple of classes and I grew to love it." "From there, my passion for it slowly unfolded. That's what made me want to try acting," clarifies McQueen. McQueen talks to Des Sampson about his famous grandfather and the show's new season. “It’s funny, I’m a little different than they expect.Vampire Diaries star Steven R. “People expect you to be something, be kind of the same and be great, I guess,” he says. He says doesn’t mind telling the truth – “it usually comes up and it’s not something that bugs me at all, in fact it’s kind of cool to talk about it” – although he says it adds a little pressure to perform. “But she wanted me to hold off when I was younger just so I could have a normal childhood.” Over the years, he’s kept such a low profile that when he shows up for work, some industry people have to ask him if he’s related to the original Steve McQueen. “My mom kind of suspected,” he says of his attraction to the family business. McQueen, who is currently being homeschooled until he graduates, says he has always sort of leaned toward acting, but his parents wanted to keep him out of show business until he was old enough to handle it. I’m pretty close with my biological dad, but I think of him more like an uncle. “My stepdad has been more like a biological dad in my life. He was raised by his mother, Stacia, and his stepfather, who still plays for the Los Angeles Kings. The teen actor’s parents got divorced when he was still an infant and his mom remarried when he was around a year old, he says. The elder McQueen was probably the most revered tough-guy actors of his generation. “My favorites are probably ‘Papillon’ and ‘The Thomas Crown Affair.’ ” “I love everything I’ve seen that he was in,” says McQueen, 17. Still, his legendary grandfather, whom he never got to meet, isn’t far from his thoughts. His first television work was a guest appearance on CBS’ sci-fi thriller, “Threshold” earlier this month. He appears this season for 10 episodes on The WB’s “Everwood” playing a teen-age piano prodigy with a bad attitude. McQueen, who took up acting little more than a year ago, seems to be getting his chance. “He chooses really cool, awkward films and he’s always very interesting to watch, so I’d like to – not mimic – but kind of use him as an example.” McQueen has Hollywood tough guy in his blood.īut the 17-year-old grandson of movie legend Steve McQueen, son of B-movie actor Chad McQueen (and stepson of hockey great Luc Robitaille) would rather have Johnny Depp’s acting career. ![]()
